What is Waxing and how is it performed?
Waxing is a method of hair removal that involves applying a warm or hot wax to the skin, which sticks to the hair and is then removed, pulling the hair out from the roots.
The waxing process can be done on various parts of the body, including the legs, arms, underarms, back, chest, and face.
Waxing is considered a temporary method of hair removal, as the hair typically grows back within several weeks. Some people find that with regular waxing, the hair becomes finer and grows back more slowly over time, although this can vary from person to person.
Is Hot Waxing better than Strip Waxing?
The superiority of hot wax versus strip wax can be a matter of personal preference and the specific needs of the individual.
Hot wax is a thicker consistency that is spread onto the skin in a thin layer and left to cool. Once it has hardened, the wax is then pulled off, removing the hair with it. Hot wax is typically used for more sensitive areas, such as the face, bikini line, and underarms, as it is less likely to cause discomfort and is better suited for removing shorter, finer hairs.
Hot wax and strip wax are two common methods used in hair removal. Hot wax, also known as hard wax, is applied warm to the skin. It hardens upon cooling and is then removed directly without the need for cloth or paper strips. Strip wax, or soft wax, is applied thinly over the skin and removed using cloth or paper strips.
Soft wax adheres to both the hair and the skin, which can cause more discomfort during removal. This is especially noticeable in sensitive areas or for clients with sensitive skin. Because soft wax sticks to the skin, it can cause more irritation and redness compared to hot wax. This can be more pronounced if the same area needs to be waxed multiple times.
Soft wax is less effective on shorter hair, as it may not grip the hair firmly enough. This can result in incomplete hair removal or the need for multiple applications. If the wax is applied too hot, it can burn the skin. This requires careful temperature control to avoid injury.
In our salon we only work with hot wax as this is causing less discomfort and is more efficient.
How long should the hair be for waxing?
For hot waxing, the hair should typically be about 1/4 to 1/2 inch long, which is approximately 6 to 12 millimeters. This length allows the wax to properly adhere to the hair, ensuring that it can be removed from the root. This is approximately the size on a grain of rice.
If the hair is shorter than 1/4 inch (about 6 millimeters), the wax may not be able to grip the hair effectively, which can lead to incomplete hair removal. Hot wax is known to remove hair as short as 1mm, so it’s recommended to wait 3-4 weeks after a waxing session or 2-3 weeks if you shave.
If you’re unsure about the length of your hair, don’t worry, we can trim it if needed.
